The darker side of Snow White

We all know the Disney Tale, but did you know that Snow White was a story once meant for adults?

For example, in the original version of the fairytale collected by the Brothers Grimm, it is Snow White’s natural mother who develops an insane jealousy of her own daughter’s beauty and sets out to murder her. We expect Freudian psychoanalysts will have a field day with this original story. But the Grimms’ German fairytale is not the only version of Snow White, similar stories with the recurring themes of mock-death, abuse and rivalry can also be found in tales passed down in Italy and Scotland.

Lark Crush: Zooey Deschanel – modern day snow white?

We love playing casting director, fitting the faces of actors we know into characters from our favourite tales. And since we’re on the subject of Snow White this week, I have to spill the beans on the raven haired beauty that would be perfect in the role of Snow White.

Presenting… Zooey Deschanel!

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel makes a perfect Snow White (we think)

Now, with her raven locks, startlingly blue doe eyes and fair skin, and that overall air of innocent girlishness (with just the right dash of quirkiness mixed in for a modern panache), I can just imagine the Hunter sparing her, the Dwarves doting on her, and the Evil Queen seething with jealousy wanting to be her.

In case you think of Snow White as a mild, flat character, check out this audio excerpt from Neil Gaiman’s short story, “Snow Glass Apples”, a retelling of the familiar fairy tale (or rather, Disney Tale).

And if you liked it, read the whole thing here.

Or show your support and buy it in this compilation.
