Take a moment to think about our most dependable mode of transport. Our feet! Many of us zip about each day, spending hours standing, walking or torturing our feet in towering heels. And yet we’re usually so busy we hardly get time to fit in a massage to soothe our aching bodies (and feet). That’s when a foot soak comes in handy. It’s easy to prepare, and a relaxing soak once a week can help to relieve tired feet and bodies, soothe rheumatic aches and pains and increase our circulation. Afterall, those familiar with the theory of foot reflexology will know that our feet is a map to the rest of our body, so pampering them is a way of pampering the rest of our body as well!
So how do you go about preparing a foot soak? All you need is a basin of warm water. Ideally, water should be high enough to reach your calves. Fill the basin with really warm water (about 40 degrees Celsius). Since our feet lie furthest from our heart, it’s at the end of the circulatory cycle. So a really warm, stimulating foot soak will do loads to kick-start their circulation.
Once the water is ready, add in a few drops of essential oils of your choice. Some ideas: Use lavender for relaxation, camomile to soothe and nourish, rosemary for detoxification and circulation. Alternatively, you can also add a cup of apple cider vinegar as an anti-fungal and deodorizing agent.
Get your favourite book or magazine ready, arm yourself with a nice cup of tea, and then soak your feet in the basin for 20-30 minutes while you sit, sip, read and relax! Doing this at least once a week will put a spring in your step for sure!
